CYCLING FOR GOLD

Between Paerora and Waihi, State Highway 2 clings to the sheer edge of the stunning Karangahake Gorge.  Site of the original gold rush in 1875, the mine workings and relics of the ore processing plant provide a fascinating insight into the toil for gold.  And all set in the scenic backdrop of the gorge.

Karangahake Gorge

We had much enjoyed the must-do 'Windows Walk' through mine tunnels on our last visit;  this time we wanted to cycle along the route of the old railway line through the gorge.

Forming part of the Hauraki Rail Trail, one of New Zealand's great rides, the section through Karangahake was used to take ore from various mines to the battery.  Our base at Waihi Motor Camp was close to the starting point of The Goldfields Railway at Waihi station. We decided that this would be an interesting and enjoyable way to cheat by hitching a ride to the start of the gorge at Waikino.  But we did only buy one-way tickets so we would have to cycle back to Waihi!

The cycling route includes the trail's longest swing bridge and a 1km tunnel which is only partially (and dimly) lit.  But fortunately we had remembered to bring the torch and to charge it up!

Phew! Made it through the 1km tunnel

Overall, we covered a total of about 25km on a good cycling surface and, through the gorge, the trail is family friendly and easy going.  The section back to Waihi from Waikino was rather more challenging in places.  And we even had some loose stock to contend which seem to have forded the river whilst taking a drink.  At times it was suggested that return tickets on the railway would have been appreciated!

Should've bought a return ticket!
